Joy to the World: Advent Week 1

Daily Devotional/Group Discussion Questions

Advent is a Latin word that means “coming.” During this time, we remember that Christ stepped into our brokenness, and we anticipate His second coming. This series will provide activities for you and your family, and they are always optional but fun and beneficial.

Daily prayer: Keep a prayer list this season for the people you want to show love to, and ask God  to use your small actions for His great purposes.

Mon. Nov 27

Read Genesis 3:1-15 & 1 Corinthians 15:45-49. What does fruit have to do with the Christmas story? With your story? Activity: Google instructions to make a citrus garland (or check Bethel’s facebook page).

Tue. Nov 28

Read Genesis 12:1-9, 21:1-7, 22:15-18, John 8:56-58.  What Joy did Abraham have? List out ways that you have joy today, despite any hard times. Activity: Find the hymn “Joy to the World” and sing with your family (or look up “Unspeakable Joy” by Chris Tomlin).

Wed. Nov 29

Read Isaiah 7:10-14, Jeremiah 23:1-8, 1 John 4:7-10. What were some details included in these prophecies? Are there more that you can think of? How were these prophecies fulfilled? Activity: Light the first advent candle and be intentional to spend more time than usual in prayer as an individual and with your family. Also, join Bethel in Advent worship at 7pm.

Thurs. Nov 30

Read 1 Samuel 16:6-13, Matthew 22:41-46, & Revelation 22:16. Activity: Draw a family tree as far back as you can remember. Using Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38, draw Jesus’ family tree. Do any names stand out to you? Why?

Fri. Dec 1

Read Isaiah 11:1-10. How are we called to treat the less popular or less loved? Who in your life needs to know that God loves them deeply? Activity: Plant some seeds in a pot in your home. As you watch it grow this Advent season, reflect and discuss how our life is like a seed.

Sat. Dec 2

Read Genesis 1:1-27. What was special about the way we were created? How do you know without a doubt that God loves you? Activity: Create something that shows love. You can bake cookies, make a card, draw a picture… share with someone who needs to be reminded that they are loved.
