GodSpeak – Colossians 1:24-2:5 – August 4-9

Reading Paul, Hearing Jesus (GEPC)
Colossians 1:24-2:5

Paul rejoices in the midst of his confinement that God is working in Colosse. Paul encourages them to hold on to the mysterious hope of the gospel, maturing in love and good works

Monday, August 4
Read Colossians 1:24-2:5. What do you think Paul means when he says he is filling up what was lacking in Christ’s afflictions? Was Christ’s suffering insufficient? How could Paul’s suffering be an encouragement to the Colossian church? Does that happen today?

Tuesday, August 5
After reviewing Colossians 1:24-2:5, read James 1:1-18. James also considers the trials faced in our Christian walk to be counted in all joy. Why rejoice in suffering? What advice does James give for standing firm in the midst of suffering and temptation?

Wednesday, August 6
After reviewing Colossians 1:24-2:5, read Matthew 13:10-17. Paul calls the gospel a “mystery.” Jesus also said that there was a “secret of the kingdom” that allowed them to interpret his parables. What is the secret? Why don’t others see it like we do?

Thursday, August 7
After reviewing Colossians 1:24-2:5, read Matthew 3:1-12. Paul says that his task was to proclaim Jesus, “warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom.” What was John’s warning? What is our warning to others today? In such a sensitive tolerant world, how do we keep our warning poignant?

Friday, August 8
After reviewing Colossians 1:24-2:5, read Matthew 5:38-48. The Greek word Paul uses for “mature” is the same as the word Jesus uses for “perfect” in Matthew 5:48. Do you think of Christian maturity as striving for perfection? In a sinful world, what does perfection/maturity look like?

Saturday, August 9
After reviewing Colossians 1:24-2:5, read 2 Timothy 4:1-8. This world is filled with “plausible arguments” against Christ. Paul also calls them “irreverent, silly myths.” What are the plausible arguments of our day and how do should respond to them?
