Reading Paul, Hearing Jesus (GEPC)
Colossians 3

We have been buried with Christ in baptism and raised with him to new life. Why would we knowingly jump back in the grave? Live the new life! Set your mind on things above! Praise God!

Monday, August 18
Read Colossians 3:1-17. What are the “things that are above?” What makes them “above?” Why is it important to “die” to the old self? Of what Paul says we are to “put on,” which are the most challenging for us? Forgiving each other? Being thankful? Doing everything in the name of Jesus? Why are these so challenging for us?

Tuesday, August 19
Read Colossians 3:18-25. How does this section relate to what Paul just wrote? We have a tendency to compartmentalize our faith. Does Paul allow us to do that? Why not?

Wednesday, August 20
After reviewing Colossians 3, read Luke 12:13-34. Paul encourages us to set our minds on the things that are above. What does Jesus have to say about that? What treasures do you have on earth that are keeping your mind captive to earthly things?

Thursday, August 21
After reviewing Colossians 3, read Matthew 6:1-15. What does Jesus have to say about forgiveness? Do we earn salvation by forgiving others? Why or why not? What makes forgiving others so important? Who are you holding a grudge against? What are you going to do about it?

Friday, August 22
After reviewing Colossians 3, read Luke 17:1-19. Paul encourages us to “put on” a lot of virtues. How many of those do we find Jesus teaching about in these 19 verses from Luke? Can you find them all? Can you find them all in yourself? Your church?

Saturday, August 23
After reviewing Colossians 3, read Ephesians 5:22-6:9. In Ephesians, Paul expands on his instructions to family members and workers. Understanding Paul’s intent, how do you think Paul would address the issues of family and work today?
