Daily Devotional/Group Discussion Questions

Get a glimpse of what it means to live a life of giving thanks—one permeated by a grateful heart that overflows to others.

Daily prayer: Look up the words to the hymn “Come Thou Fount”. Pick a different verse to sing and pray through each morning.

Mon. Nov 20

Read Exodus 16:11-18 & Deuteronomy 8:1-10. We have more, but enjoy less. No matter how hard we work or how much money we accumulate, on the whole we are not happier. Why is that? What are you grumbling for right now, and what can you be praising God for instead?

Tue. Nov 21

Read 1 Samuel 7:2-13 & Ephesians 1:3-10.  The hymn “Come Thou Fount” acknowledges God as the giver of every blessing. Who receives praise for the blessings we are given? How can we commemorate God’s actions on our behalf? How can we avoid wandering away from our Savior?

Wed. Nov 22

Read Psalm 119:49-64. Consider verse 50. List out some promises of God in the Bible. How should the promises of God reshape the way you respond in times of suffering? How have you found His presence to be a sufficient “portion” in difficult times?

Thurs. Nov 23

Read Phil. 4:6-20. Happy Thanksgiving! Today, describe the peace of God as illustrated in this passage. Try this breathing exercise at some point today. As you exhale, think “breathe out all that is negative” and think of these things on your mind. But as you inhale, think “breathe in peace.” May the peace that passes understanding be with you today.

Fri. Nov 24

Read Matthew 6:25-33. As this day is one of the craziest days in stores, consider consumerism. In contrast, consider simplicity. We can be possessed by what we have—or don’t have. While Christians should live simply, the focus should not be on getting rid of what we have, but rather upon cultivating the disposition of “a life of joyful unconcern for possessions”. How can we cultivate an attitude of contentment and gratitude?

Sat. Nov 25

Read Psalm 118. List out the ways that you can move forward from thanksgiving into a life that is one of thanksgiving and praise. What does that look like? If you need, try the breathing exercise again to help you in your prayers about this.
