The Gospel of John 13

There is no better introduction to this chapter than verse 1. “It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.”

“A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Monday, January 2     Read John 13:1-17. Jesus assumes the position of the lowest of servants with his disciples, then tells them to do the same. How? Is he telling us the same thing?

Tuesday, January 3     Read John 13:18-38. From foot washings to bold predictions and in the midst of that, a new command. What does Jesus mean by love? What does that love look like?

Wednesday, January 4     After reviewing John 13, read Romans 5:1-10, Ephesians 2:1-10. How does Jesus action of washing feet show his disciples the “full extent of his love”?

Thursday, January 5     After reviewing John 13, read Psalm 116. This Psalm is the expression of one who has been saved by God. What is this Psalm have to tell us about Jesus’ action of washing feet and his instruction to his disciples to do likewise?

Friday, January 6     After reviewing John 13, read 1 Peter 5. Notice how the narrative reads almost as if the devil is sitting at the table with them (v.27). Where is Satan? What is he up to?

Saturday, January 7     After reviewing John 13, read John 15:9-17. Jesus is not finished talking about love. In this preview of John 15, what does it mean for us to love one another? How does our love for each other connect with foot washing and friendship?
