GodSpeak – Matthew 4 – March 11-16

Disciple (n./v.): The Gospel of Matthew
Matthew 4

From a baptism in the Jordan river to the wilderness for 40 days, Jesus is still walking in the footsteps of Israel. Only after that we hear the first commands of Jesus, “Repent… Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Monday, March 11
Read Matthew 4:1-11. What is Satan’s tactic for tempting Jesus? What is Jesus’ tactic for defending himself? When do you hear the Bible used to tempt us to do something wrong?

Tuesday, March 12
Read Matthew 4:12-25. What does it mean to repent? Why does Jesus link repentance to the “kingdom of heaven?” How is Jesus’ call to his first disciples also His call to us?

Wednesday, March 13
After reviewing Matthew 4, read Deuteronomy 8. What does it mean that we are not to “live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of Yahweh?” What makes God’s words greater than God’s provision for our lives?

Thursday, March 14
After reviewing Matthew 4, read Psalm 91 & Deuteronomy 6:13-16. Satan uses Psalm 91 to tempt Jesus to jump off the temple. Is that what Psalm 91 says? How does Deuteronomy 6 put that misuse to rest?

Friday, March 15
After reviewing Matthew 4, read Matthew 19:16-30. Jesus also calls this rich young man to follow him. What was different about the result this time? What would you say to Jesus if you were put in that situation?

Saturday, March 16
After reviewing Matthew 4, read 1 Corinthians 15:42-49. Jesus begins healing all sorts of diseases. According to 1 Cor. 15, what future reality is Jesus foreshadowing?
