GodSpeak – “Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me” – January 7-12

Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

Monday, January 7      “Rock of Ages, cleft for me,”
Read 1 Corinthians 10. Paul writes to a church with temptation at every turn. What is his advice to them? Are the temptations we face all that different? How do you resist temptation?

Tuesday, January 8      “Let the water and the blood, – Cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r”
Read Hebrews 9. The blood of Jesus was necessary to cleanse us from our sin. What are your “ acts that lead to death?” How does the cleansing blood of Jesus free you to serve him?

Wednesday, January 9      “All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone.”
Read Romans 3. What happens to Christianity when we believe that we are only partially sinful? Mostly sinful? All for sin could not atone?

Thursday, January 10      “Simply to Thy cross I cling”
Read 1 Corinthians 1:18 -2:5. It’s easy to cling to our own wisdom, or what we think is wisdom. It takes faith to cling to the cross of Christ. Think of a time when the world’s wisdom failed you and you had only the cross of Christ to cling to. How did it go?

Friday, January 11      “Wash me Savior, or I die.”
Read Ezekiel 36:22-32. Ezekiel prophesies of a time when Israel will be cleansed of her wickedness and return to the land. How are we cleansed of our wickedness? Ever look back at what you used to do and “loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices?”

Saturday, January 12      “See Thee on Thy judgment throne”
Read Matthew 19:16-30. Jesus describes what kinds of things will happen when he sits on his glorious throne. Who is going to be there? Who is first? Who is last?

LSB 761       Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me

Listen

 1          Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure:
Cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r.

2          Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy Law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

3         Nothing in my hand I bring;
Simply to Thy cross I cling.
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

4          While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
