Daily Devotional/Group Discussion Questions

In every way that Jacob, or Israel, proved to be the unrighteousness son or nation, Jesus proved that He was the righteous Son. His obedience is ascribed to us because death needed perfection. See how Jesus is the True and Better Israel.

Daily Prayer: Pray through Psalm 98.

Monday, July 4
Read Genesis 25:19-26, 27:1-40; Romans 9:10-12.
The law called “primogeniture” provided that at least a double share of the father’s property be given to the firstborn son when the father died. Who should have gotten the blessing? Jacob means “he grasps the heel”, or figuratively, “he deceives.” What was his deception?

Tuesday, July 5
Read Gen. 28:10-22 and Matthew 1:1-2. Despite his deception, God keeps His covenant with the one who has been blessed. What is that covenant?

Wednesday, July 6
Read Gen. 30:25-43 and Matthew 9:9-13. We can actually see God’s blessings being poured out on Jacob. What does Jesus do that is similar? How is the blessing through Jesus greater?

Thursday, July 7
Read Gen. 32:22-32. What does “Israel” mean? How would or could this characterize the nation of Israel?

Friday, July 8
Read Gen.35:22-26 and Matt.10:2-4, 19:28. Jacob was the head of the 12 tribes of Israel. Who did Jesus hang out with? What significance does this have?

Saturday, July 9
Read Numbers 32:13, Matt. 4:1-11, and Hebrews 4:15-16.
The story of Jacob is the start of a nation. How is Jesus the true and Better Israel? What does this mean for us today?
