Acts 5
In our readings this week, we begin to hear of some of the internal (5:1-11, 6:1-7) and external (5:17-42) issues that arise in the early church. The disciples, led by the Spirit, work to continue Jesus’ mission on earth.
Monday, May 14 Read Acts 5:1-16. Up until this point, we have read little about issues in the church. In fact, many more are going to arise as the believers sort out what it means to be God’s people. Why do you think this story is included by Luke? Why would he intentionally share about a scandal in the early church?
Tuesday, May 15 Read Acts 5:17–Acts 6:7. In the face of the Jewish leaders, Peter and the apostles confidently state, “we must obey God rather than man”. What if there comes a day in our country when the government hushes churches? How would we react?
Wednesday, May 16 After Reviewing Acts 5:1–Acts 6:7, Read 1 Peter 3:8-22. The disciples continue to suffer persecution in Jerusalem. What instructions does this passage give for those suffering evil?
Thursday, May 17 After Reviewing Acts 5:1–Acts 6:7, Read Psalm 143. When persecution comes, be in prayer. In this psalm, David petitions the Lord to rescue him, preserve him and lead him. May this be our prayer every day. Try praying this psalm aloud to God.
Friday, May 18 After Reviewing Acts 5:1–Acts 6:7, Read 2 Corinthians 5:11-21. The disciples were willing to suffer for the Gospel because they knew the eternal importance of sharing Jesus. They had a “kingdom of God mentality” rather than an earthly one. What does this passage tell us about how we should live and view the world?
Saturday, May 19 After Reviewing Acts 5:1–Acts 6:7, Read Matthew 5:1-12. Read the Beatitudes with new eyes. Do you believe what Jesus is saying here? Do you believe that you are blessed when you are persecuted because of him?
