A Mighty Fortress
Monday, October 22 “A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon”
Read Psalm 46. A fortress is only needed when there is an assault. What assault does the Psalmist describe? What assault is raging against you? How does God provide you with “a mighty fortress?“
Tuesday, October 23 “The old evil foe Now means deadly woe;”
Read John 8:31-59. Jesus calls out the Jews for abandoning Abraham in favor of the devil. This was not politically correct, but he was right! Could Jesus say something similar about us? How does the devil sneak his way into our walk with Jesus?
Wednesday, October 24 “But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God Himself elected”
Read Ephesians 6:10-17. Once again, we have an assault upon our walk with Jesus. What has Jesus equipped us with to fight off this attack? Do you make full use of this armor?
Thursday, October 25 “Though devils all the world should fill”
Read 1 Peter 5:1-11. Peter encourages the pastors to resist our “enemy the devil.” What is Peter’s advice to the pastors? While we may put up a decent fight, who ultimately restores us?
Friday, October 26 “He’s by our side upon the plain – Our victory has been won;”
Read Romans 8. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Nothing. So when we’re fighting our toughest battles, where is Jesus? Describe the comfort it brings to know Jesus will never leave nor forsake you.
Saturday, October 27 “And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife,”
Read Luke 12:22-34. Jesus sent his disciples out with nothing to show them how to totally depend upon him. Imagine the pain of having everything taken away. What remains? What does that tell us about our priorities while we have these things?

A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from ev’ry need
That hath us now o’ertaken.
The old evil foe
Now means deadly woe;
Deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight;
On earth is not his equal.
With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the valiant One,
Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this?
Jesus Christ it is,
Of Sabaoth Lord,
And there’s none other God;
He holds the field forever.
Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us,
We tremble not, we fear no ill;
They shall not overpow’r us.
This world’s prince may still
Scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none.
He’s judged; the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.
The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it;
He’s by our side upon the plain
With His good gifts and Spirit.
And take they our life,
Goods, fame, child, and wife,
Though these all be gone,
Our vict’ry has been won;
The Kingdom ours remaineth.
