Monday, September 13 Song of Songs 4-6 Read & Listen Online (Click “Audio” link to listen)
1. Solomon describes his wife-to-be in Songs of Songs 4:1–7; she describes him after their marriage in Songs of Songs 5:10–16 and he describes her after their marriage in Song of Songs 6:4–9. What do these descriptions say about their love for each other? How are they a fitting description of Christ’s love for His bride, the church, and the church’s love for Christ? See Ephesians 5.

2. Review Song of Songs 7:1–8:14. The Lutheran marriage liturgy describes marriage as “an honorable estate, which God himself has instituted and blessed, and by which He gives us a picture of the very communion of Christ and His bride, the Church.” The marriage of Solomon and the Shulammite is a picture of Christ’s relationship to the Church (Ephesians 5:23-25; Colossians 1:18). How do Christian marriages depict the relationship between Christ and the church? In your closing prayers, thank God for Christian marriages and pray that God would strengthen their witness to His love for all people.
3. Songs of Songs 8:6 has been called the theological highlight of the book. What is the Shulammite asking Solomon to do? How would we express a similar request today? Since the Shulammite is a symbol for the church and Solomon is a symbol for Christ, how does Christ fulfill this request for the church today? See Acts 2:38–39 and Ephesians 1:13–14. Read these three passages one after the other: Song of Songs 8:14; 1 Corinthians 16:22b; Revelation 22:20. How are these passages similar in their request? How is the picture of the Shulammite, perhaps after being married many years, wanting to experience the love of Solomon yet again, a glorious picture of the Christian’s anticipation of Christ’s return on the Last Day?

4. Review Isaiah 1:1-15 and Isaiah 1:15-20. Contrast the two spiritual conditions described in these sections. Describe the new spiritual condition available to all through Christ Jesus our Lord.

5. Isaiah 3:18-26 pictures the consequences of God‘s judgment. Relate this picture to the ultimate consequence to be experienced by those without faith in Jesus. See also Isaiah 66:24. 3.

6. What examples can you give of when calling evil good and good evil, of substituting darkness for light and light for darkness, and bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter (Isaiah 5:20)?

7. Compare Isaiah 6:1-8 with Ephesians 2:3-10. 2. The writer of Hebrews (2:11-14) applies Isaiah 8:17-18 to Jesus. Explain these words in the light of Jesus‘ saving work on our behalf.
