Daily Devotional/Group Discussion Questions
All of the elements of armor listed in Ephesians 6 that we have studied are defensive in nature. This week, we explore the “Sword of the Spirit,” and its offensive qualities. See how scripture and prayer can be your ultimate weapon.
Daily Prayer: Each morning, read Ephesians 6:11-18, praying through the verses asking God to be your strength and comfort.
Prayer Exercise 1: Write out your prayer plan for the week. Read Mark 1:35 if you need a refresher on how Jesus encouraged us to do this.
Read Hebrews 4:1-16. The Roman Sword was called a gladius. It was sharpened on both sides and at the tip, making it lethal. How sharp is the word of God? How do we draw near the throne of Grace through prayer?
Read Matthew 4:1-9, Deuteronomy 8:3, 6:16, and Psalm 91:11-12. How does Jesus use scripture offensively? defensively? How does Satan misuse Scripture? What does this speak to you today?
Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. How is Scripture a weapon of mass destruction?
Read Hebrews 5:12-14 and Romans 8:26-39. Wielding a sword takes a lot of training. What is the difference between a milk drinker and solid food eater? How can we be aided and trained? How is prayer effective in training?
Prayer Exercise 2: Memorizing scripture is one of the best ways to prepare for spiritual attack. This week, pick a set of verses to memorize as a prayer in hard times. If you need a suggestion, try to memorize 1 verse a day from Isaiah 43:1-7 (try memorizing the “Message” version of the Bible!) praying through each verse. What words move you? What does God say to you today?
