GodSpeak – Baptize in His Name – January 28-February 2

Disciple (n./v.): The Gospel of Matthew
Baptize in His Name

Jesus tells his disciples to make disciples… but how? Baptize in the Triune name of God. This leaves two questions. What is baptism and what does it mean to be baptized in the name of God?

Monday, January 28
Read Matthew 28:18-20. There’s a lot going on here. Baptize – in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. What happens in baptism? Why is it significant to baptize in the triune name of God?

Tuesday, January 29
Read Psalm 51. In the Hebrew law, ritual washing only made a person ritually clean. It didn’t forgive sins. What does David ask God to do for him? What does baptism do for us?

Wednesday, January 30
Read Titus 3:1-10. Here Paul disciples Titus to encourage good works among his congregation. What is their motivation to do those good works? What kind of washing is Paul talking about?

Thursday, January 31
Read Romans 6. Paul says we were baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus. What happened on the cross for us that also happens in baptism? Now what?

Friday, February 1
Read Psalm 20 and Jeremiah 14:13-16. What‘s in a name? What’s in the name of God? If God’s name is not just who his is, but what he wants for our world, then what does it mean to be baptized in the Triune name of God? Does that mean every word and action is in His name?

Saturday, February 2
Read Matthew 6:5-15. Hallowed = Holy = Set Apart. As Luther reminds us, God’s name is already holy without our prayer, so how do we keep it set apart among us?
