Breaking Bread

As a part of being in the body of Christ, we worship and commune together.  In the Scriptures they called it “breaking bread.”
Daily Prayer: Lead us to worship you with true intimacy and unity.  Amen.

Monday, November 17
Read Exodus 16When the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron the Lord took responsibility and provided for them.   We often look to the human causes of our situation rather than God.  How does worship help us solve that problem?

Tuesday, November 18
Read John 6Five loaves and two fish fed a multitude.  Jesus’ body is the bread of life.  It is real food.  Is Jesus being literal or figurative?  How might this remind us of the Lord’s Supper?  If we are to be that intimately associated with Jesus, how does that affect our worship?

Wednesday, November 19
Read Luke 22:1-23Jesus reclined at the table with his disciples, broke the bread and said, “This is my body.”  Imagine out loud what it must have been like to be there.  What would your feelings be?  Imagine how close you would become with the others there experiencing the same thing.  What would it take for our worship to produce that same closeness?

Thursday, November 20
Read Luke 24Jesus said the bread “is my body.”  The Emmaus disciples recognized Jesus as he broke the bread.  How do we recognize the presence of Jesus in our midst?  When do we “break bread?”  Is Jesus obviously present there?  Why or why not?

Friday, November 21
Read Acts 2:42-47, Acts 20:7-12They devoted themselves to the breaking of bread.  What did that mean to them?  What kinds of things happened when they “broke bread?”  How is it the same today?  Different?

Saturday, November 22
Read 1 Corinthians 10:14-22Jesus is the “bread of life.”  We are the body of Christ.  We are “one loaf.”  What is Paul is trying to tell them?  Why is unity in the body of Christ so important?  What can you do today to encourage that unity?
