Life|Love: 1 John 4:1-6

John encourages us to discern the forces of evil in our world.  If we cannot tell the difference between what is right and wrong, we stumble into the darkness, hurting ourselves and others.

Daily Prayer: Lord, keep me aware of the evil around me and in me so that I may love you and others like Jesus did.  Amen.

Monday, May 18
Read 1 John 4:1-6.  Focus on verse 1.  How do you suppose we can “test the spirits?”  When have you found out that something you were participating in or trusting to be good turned out to be false or even hurtful to others? For more, see Revelation 2:1-7.

Tuesday, May 19
Read 1 John 4:1-6.  Focus on verse 2What is the standard that we use to evaluate if something is from God or from the devil?  Why is it so important to confess that Jesus came into the flesh?  For more, see 1 Corinthians 12:1-11.

Wednesday, May 20
Read 1 John 4:1-6.  Focus on verse 3John makes a very black and white statement about which spirits are from God and which are not from God.  Should there be a grey area?  Why or why not?  How should we treat those who live with a spirit “not from God?”  For more, see Matthew 7:15-20.

Thursday, May 21
Read 1 John 4:1-6.  Focus on verse 4.  How have we overcome the world?  It is easy to think that it’s the other way around.  What should we do when we get discouraged and start to think that Christians are being overcome?  For more, see Romans 12:9-21.

Friday, May 22
Read 1 John 4:1-6.  Focus on verse 5.  Do you ever feel like our beautiful lifesaving message of love is spoken into a vacuum?  What kinds of messages does the world like to hear?  Should our messages sound more like the world’s message?  For more, see 1 Corinthians 1:18-31.

Saturday, May 23
Read 1 John 4:1-6.  Focus on verse 6How is being “from God” similar to being “from” another country and speaking another language?  Who can understand us?  Who can’t?  How does someone come to understand us?  For more, see 1 Corinthians 2.
