GodSpeak – “O Sacred Head Now Wounded” – November 12-17

O Sacred Head Now Wounded

Monday, November 19    “Now scornfully surrounded With thorns Thine only crown.”
Read John 19. One of the beautiful aspects of this hymn is that it is both scriptural and personal. Take a look at John 19 that way. What are the personal realities of the crucifixion for you?

Tuesday, November 20     “Thus Thou has lost Thy vigor, Thy strength, in this sad strife.”
Read Psalm 22. Reading Psalm 22 is painful enough. Reading Psalm 22 after reading the account of the crucifixion sheds light upon what happened to Jesus on the cross. How can the Son of God be forsaken, poured out and weakened?

Wednesday, November 21     “Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain.”
Read Isaiah 53. Isaiah foresees a suffering servant who is killed for the sins of others. Jesus served you by taking your sins to the cross. You don’t have to suffer for them. Read Isaiah 53 again, and thank Jesus every time you read about what he’s suffered for you.

Thursday, November 22     “Great blessings Thou didst give me, O source of gifts divine.”
Read Matthew 5:1-16. Jesus gives us great blessings. We have the truth about the Kingdom of God! We are light! We are salt! Then why does is seem so unappealing to read vs.2-12? How are we blessed for these things?

Friday, November 23     “My Savior, be Thou near me – O leave me not alone”
Read John 14:18-31. Jesus is trying to show his disciples that his departure will not be permanent. Pain has a way of making us feel alone. How can we know that Jesus is present? How do we feel the peace that Jesus gives?

Saturday, November 24    “Mine eyes shall then behold Thee,
Read Job 19. Job has lost everything and is pressed to the limit. In contemplating his own death, what is Job’s hope? Why do you have the same hope?

LSB 450          O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

Listen

1     O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown.
O sacred Head, what glory, What bliss, till now was Thine!
Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.

2     How pale Thou art with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn!
How doth Thy face now languish That once was bright as morn!
Grim death, with cruel rigor, Hath robbed Thee of Thy life;
Thus Thou hast lost Thy vigor, Thy strength, in this sad strife.

3      What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered Was all for sinners’ gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Savior! ’Tis I deserve Thy place;
Look on me with Thy favor, And grant to me Thy grace.

4       My Shepherd, now receive me; My Guardian, own me Thine.
Great blessings Thou didst give me, O Source of gifts divine.
Thy lips have often fed me With words of truth and love;
Thy Spirit oft hath led me To heav’nly joys above.

5      What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end?
O make me Thine forever! And should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never, Outlive my love for Thee.

6       My Savior, be Thou near me When death is at my door;
Then let Thy presence cheer me, Forsake me nevermore!
When soul and body languish, O leave me not alone,
But take away mine anguish By virtue of Thine own!

7       Be Thou my consolation, My shield, when I must die;
Remind me of Thy passion When my last hour draws nigh.
Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, Upon Thy cross shall dwell,
My heart by faith enfold Thee. Who dieth thus dies well.
