He was Sent (Godspeak Readings March 7-12)

Who is the Jesus? He was Sent.

Jesus tells a parable about the owner of a vineyard who sent his son to subdue some rebellious tenants, only to have his son killed by them.  How amazing that God sent his son to save us!

Daily Prayer: Thank you for sending Jesus to save us from our rebellious ways.  Amen.

Monday, March 7
Read Luke 20:1-8People in authority do not like to have their authority questioned by someone who has not been authorized to do so.  Jesus answers their question with a question.  What is his implied answer?  How does their answer reveal their real authority?

Tuesday, March 8
Read Luke 20:9-20. This parable has many associations that connect the history of Israel with the time of Jesus.  Who do you think the tenants are?  What’s the vineyard?  Who is the owner, the servants and the son?  Who are the others tenants that will tend the vineyard?  Why does this parable make the religious leaders so upset?

Wednesday, March 9
Read Acts 4:1-22.  Peter and John healed a man crippled from birth and are called upon by the religious leaders to identify “what power or name” they used to do this.  What was their answer?  What biblical reference did Peter use to speak about Jesus?  How did the religious leaders react?

Thursday, March 10
Read Isaiah 5:1-7Here again we have a poem that is filled with associations.  What is this vineyard?  Who is the beloved?  Why did God destroy the vineyard?  How might the parable of Jesus be seen as a continuation of this poem?

Friday, March 11
Read Matthew 23:29-39What was the attitude of the Pharisees toward the prophets? What does Jesus think of their opinion of themselves?  What is Jesus’ attitude toward Jerusalem?  When do you grieve over the wickedness of the world?  What do we do with our grief?

Saturday, March 12
Read Psalm 118.  Often when an Old Testament reference is made in the New Testament, the entire passage around the reference is also implied.  How does the entire psalm speak to the message of this parable?  How does this psalm speak to you today?
