1. Paul Kretzmann once wrote, “God punishes sin with more sin.” In chapters 22 and 23 of Ezekiel God speaks of using sinners to punish sin. The graphic language that is used to describe the sin of Israel is matched by the descriptions of the punishment that will come upon Israel. Can you think of instances in our own time where obvious sinners, to the Christian way of thinking, are used to punish sin. Now think in terms that acknowledge that “all have sinned.” How have you as a sinner been punished with more sin? What is God’s remedy? See Galatians 3:13; Romans 3:22-24; 10:4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 2:24.

1. Although the temple in Jerusalem was the place Israel thought of as their sanctuary, to Ezekiel God says He will be a sanctuary for the exiles wherever they reside (Ezekiel 11:16). What is a sanctuary? What did having a sanctuary mean for the Israelites (Psalm 31:20; 68:35; 91:9-10; Isaiah 4:6; Hebrews 6:19)? How is God a sanctuary for you?

1. Jeremiah says that as a result of their sin the Lord has treated His own people as an enemy. List the phrases in Lamentations 2:1-16 that Jeremiah used to describe what the Lord did. Jeremiah even thought his prayers wouldn’t be heard (Lamentations 3:8), yet of what was he confident (Lamentations 3:22, 32)? How would you express your own confidence in the Lord?
